How to Clean Beaded Dresses with a ‘Do Not Wash’ Label Safely

A dress covered in beautiful beads looks stunning. But the moment you check the care label, it feels like a betrayal.

“Do Not Wash, Do Not Dry Clean, Spot Clean Only.”

No machine wash. No dry cleaning. Just gently dab the stained area? At that point, it basically sounds like:
“Don’t clean it—just wear it until it’s dirty enough to throw away.”

But clothes collect sweat and dust. Not cleaning them isn’t a real option. So eventually, I took matters into my own hands and went for a DIY wash. Here’s how I managed to clean a beaded dress without ruining it.

Secure the Dress Tightly

The biggest risk is beads colliding and falling off inside the washer. Stuff the dress into a small laundry bag, or use a larger one and tie it tightly so there’s no extra space. The key is to minimize movement during the wash cycle.

Wash Alone on a Wool or Hand Wash Cycle

Place the dress in the washer and select a hand wash or wool cycle for a short, gentle run. Always wash it alone. Any contact with other garments increases friction and damage risk.

Use an Extra Spin

Because beads are heavy, the fabric can hold a lot of water. If you hang it soaking wet, the weight may stretch the fabric. Run a brief extra spin cycle to remove as much water as possible.

Air Dry Naturally

Take it out, reshape it carefully, and hang it to dry in a shaded area.

That’s it.
