Step-by-step: what I did

1. Saturate the stain with water

Generously mist or pour water directly onto the stained area. You want the fabric thoroughly damp — not just surface-wet — so the cleaning agent can penetrate the fibers.

2. Apply dish soap

Dab a small amount of dish soap directly onto the stain. Dish soap is a surprisingly effective degreaser and surfactant — it works on a wide range of unknown stains without being too harsh on delicate fabrics.

3. Work it with an ultrasonic pen

This is the key step. Using an ultrasonic stain-removal pen, apply gentle pressure in slow circular motions over the stain. Let the ultrasonic vibrations do the heavy lifting — you’re not scrubbing, just guiding. Watch the stain lift bit by bit.

4. Machine wash on hand wash cycle

Once the stain looked significantly lighter, I placed the trousers in the washing machine on the hand wash cycle — cool water, minimal agitation. This cycle mimics gentle hand washing, which is safe for most linen-rayon blends despite the dry-clean-only label.

5. Result: stain completely gone

After air drying, the trousers came out perfectly clean — no stain, no color damage, no distortion. The yellow color stayed vibrant and the fabric held its drape beautifully.

A customer brought in a cotton shirt labeled “hand wash or dry clean.” The fabric looked delicate, so extra care was required.

There were multiple stains across the shirt that appeared to be paint.

Since the stains looked water-soluble, I performed a light rinse, and some of the stains started to come out. Because the garment needed to be handled gently, I applied Shout to the stained areas to assist with stain removal, let it sit for 2–3 minutes, then ran a hand wash cycle.

Most of the stains were removed, but a few remained. For the remaining spots, I applied InkGo, waited 2–3 minutes, and ran another hand wash cycle.

The stains were completely removed.

Although it looked like yellowing, since this garment is cleaned frequently, I assumed it was a relatively fresh stain rather than oxidation or long-term discoloration.

I first gave it a light wash using a neutral detergent. Sometimes stains disappear at this stage, but this time it had no effect at all.

I then applied dish soap directly to the stain, waited a bit, and gently brushed it with a toothbrush. The stain started to shift slightly, indicating that it was likely an oil-based stain. However, some areas still didn’t move much.

I applied a stronger spotting agent (Hydret) and gently brushed again with a toothbrush. The stain almost completely disappeared, so I applied Hydret to all the stained areas and let it sit for about five minutes.

After that, I ran a light hand-wash cycle. The shirt came out perfectly clean.

A customer brought in a vintage blouse that had developed dye transfer after being washed with dark-colored clothing.

Fortunately, because it is a solid-color polyester fabric, it was a relatively easy case to try several treatment methods.

First, apply Laundry Targo directly to each area affected by the dye transfer and leave it overnight.

The next day, wash the garment normally using warm water.

The stains disappeared completely.

Fortunately, this was a case where the dye transfer was removed very easily.
